Magnets for Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles (EVs) use electric motors instead of traditional fuel-based engines, and magnets play an important role in how these motors work. The type of magnet used directly affects the motor’s performance.

  • Permanent magnets are used in motors where a constant magnetic field is required, while electromagnets are used in motors that need a changing magnetic field. When electric current flows through a coil of wire placed near strong magnets, a repulsive force is produced between the magnetic fields of the coil and the permanent magnets.
  • This force causes the coil to spin, and the spinning motion is transferred to the vehicle’s wheels through an axle, making the EV move. When selecting magnets for EV motors, engineers consider three important factors.
Considerations for selecting magnets
  1. Magnetic strength is crucial because the magnet must generate enough force to run the motor efficiently. This is why rare-earth magnets like neodymium and samarium–cobalt are commonly preferred.
  2. Heat resistance is important since EV motors generate heat during operation. Using materials that can tolerate high temperatures ensures long-term efficiency and performance.
  3. Compact design is needed because EVs require small, lightweight components. Magnets must deliver strong performance without taking up much space, which again makes rare-earth magnets highly suitable for modern electric vehicles.
