COURSE OUTCOME ATTAINMENT SYSTEM

1️. Introduction

This system computes Course Outcome (CO) Attainment based on Outcome Based Education (OBE) principles aligned with NBA/NAAC guidelines.

The attainment process integrates:

  • Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE)
  • Semester End Examination (SEE)
  • Course End Survey (Indirect Assessment)

The system automatically:

  • Maps questions to COs
  • Extracts student marks
  • Computes percentage attainment
  • Converts percentages to attainment levels
  • Combines Direct & Indirect assessment
  • Generates a complete CO attainment report (PDF)

Faculty members are not required to perform manual calculations.

2️. Roles in the Attainment System

🏛 Administration Level (Pre-Configuration)
  • Creating Courses
  • Defining Course Outcomes (CO1, CO2, etc.)
  • Mapping Questions to COs
  • Defining Program Outcomes (POs/PSOs)
  • Configuring CO–PO Matrix
  • Setting Target Attainment Level
👨‍🏫 Course Offering Faculty Level

At the Course Offering level, the faculty member is responsible for validating the academic configuration and initiating the attainment process for the respective course and department.

  • Verifying the Course Outcome (CO) definitions and CO–Question mapping configured at the Administration level.
  • Ensuring that assessment data (CAT-I, CAT-II, AAT, SEE) has been correctly uploaded for the academic year.
  • Registering / Offering the course for the specific department, regulation, academic year, and semester.
  • Initiating the automated CO attainment calculation process.
  • Reviewing the generated CO attainment report (Direct and Indirect Assessment).
  • Analyzing attainment levels with respect to the predefined target.
  • Identifying low-performing COs and recommending corrective academic measures.
  • Documenting action plans for continuous improvement as per OBE guidelines.

Faculty members do not manually enter student marks into the system. All assessment data is centrally uploaded in bulk at the academic-year level. The system performs automatic computation of attainment levels based on pre-configured mappings and uploaded marks.

3️. Direct Assessment (DA) Calculation

Course Assessment Tools and Weightages

Direct Assessment (DA) Indirect Assessment (IA)
Assessment Tool Component Component Weightage DA Weightage Assessment Tool Weightage
Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) CAT-I & CAT-II 75% 40% Course End Survey – CES
(Feedback on course outcomes collected from students)
100%
AAT 25%
Semester End Examination (SEE) 60% Total (CES) 100%
Total (CIE + SEE) 100%
Weightage of Direct Assessment (DA) is 90% Weightage of Indirect Assessment (IA) is 10%
TOTAL = DA + IA = 100%
Step 1: Percentage Attainment per Exam

For each Course Outcome (CO), student performance is analyzed question-wise based on the predefined CO–Question mapping. The percentage attainment for each assessment component is determined by evaluating how many students achieve the prescribed threshold value.

\[ \text{Percentage} = \frac{\text{Number of Students Scoring ≥ Threshold}} {\text{Total Number of Students}} \times 100 \]

This ensures that attainment reflects the proportion of students who demonstrate satisfactory achievement of the mapped Course Outcome.

The threshold value is not arbitrarily fixed. Instead, it is dynamically computed relative to the overall class performance.

Threshold Calculation:

\[ \text{Threshold} = 60\% \times \text{Class Average} \]

By defining the threshold as 60% of the class average, the system adapts to variations in exam difficulty and cohort performance, thereby ensuring fair and context-sensitive evaluation.

Step 2: Best CAT Selection

Since two Continuous Assessment Tests (CAT-I and CAT-II) are conducted, the better performance between the two is considered for attainment calculation. This approach promotes academic improvement and recognizes progressive learning.

\[ \text{Best CAT} = \max(\text{CAT-I}, \text{CAT-II}) \]

Only the higher percentage between CAT-I and CAT-II contributes to the Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) computation.

Step 3: CIE Percentage Calculation

The Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) combines the best CAT performance and Alternative Assessment Tools (AAT) using predefined internal weightages.

\[ \text{CIE Percentage} = (0.75 \times \text{Best CAT}) + (0.25 \times \text{AAT}) \]

Here:

  • 75% weightage is assigned to the best CAT performance.
  • 25% weightage is assigned to AAT components such as assignments, quizzes, or practical activities.

This blended model ensures both written examinations and continuous learning activities contribute to attainment.

Step 4: Conversion to Attainment Level

The computed percentage attainment is then translated into a standardized Attainment Level (0–3 scale) to ensure uniform reporting across courses and departments.

Percentage Range Attainment Level
≥ 70%Level 3
60–69%Level 2
50–59%Level 1
< 50%Level 0

This classification provides a clear interpretation of performance levels and facilitates benchmarking against institutional targets.

Step 5: Final Direct Attainment (DA) Calculation

The final Direct Assessment value integrates both Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) and Semester End Examination (SEE) levels according to institutional weightage policy.

\[ \text{Final Direct Attainment (DA)} = (0.40 \times \text{CIE Level}) + (0.60 \times \text{SEE Level}) \]

Where:

  • CIE contributes 40% to Direct Assessment.
  • SEE contributes 60% to Direct Assessment.

This distribution ensures that summative assessment (SEE) carries higher weightage while still recognizing the importance of continuous evaluation.

The resulting DA value (on a 0–3 scale) is later combined with Indirect Assessment to compute the overall Course Outcome attainment.

4️. Indirect Assessment (IDA)

Indirect Assessment is based on:

  • Course End Survey (Student Feedback)

Survey responses are converted into Attainment Levels.

5️. Final CO Attainment Formula

\[ \text{Final CO Attainment} = (0.90 \times \text{DA}) + (0.10 \times \text{IDA}) \]

Where:

  • DA = Direct Assessment
  • IDA = Indirect Assessment

6️. Target & Status

\[ \text{Final CO Attainment} \ge \text{Target} \]

→ Status = YES

Else → Status = NO

📘 Worked Example (For 10 Students – Single CO)

The following example demonstrates how Course Outcome attainment is calculated for a department with 10 students, based on the actual assessment structure:

  • CAT-I = 30 Marks
  • CAT-II = 30 Marks
  • AAT = 10 Marks
  • SEE = 60 Marks

Step 1: CAT-I Calculation (30 Marks)
  • Total Students = 10
  • Class Average in CAT-I = 18 Marks (out of 30)
  • Threshold = 60% of Class Average
\[ \text{Threshold} = 0.60 \times 18 = 10.8 \approx 11 \text{ Marks} \]

Suppose 7 students scored ≥ 11 marks.

\[ \text{CAT-I Percentage} = \frac{7}{10} \times 100 = 70\% \]

Step 2: CAT-II Calculation (30 Marks)
  • Class Average = 15 Marks
  • Threshold = 0.60 × 15 = 9 Marks
  • 6 students scored ≥ 9 Marks
\[ \text{CAT-II Percentage} = \frac{6}{10} \times 100 = 60\% \]

Step 3: Best CAT Selection
\[ \text{Best CAT} = \max(70, 60) = 70\% \]

Step 4: AAT Calculation (10 Marks)
  • Class Average = 7 Marks (out of 10)
  • Threshold = 0.60 × 7 = 4.2 ≈ 5 Marks
  • 8 students scored ≥ 5 Marks
\[ \text{AAT Percentage} = \frac{8}{10} \times 100 = 80\% \]

Step 5: Compute CIE Percentage

CIE combines Best CAT (75%) and AAT (25%):

\[ \text{CIE} = (0.75 \times 70) + (0.25 \times 80) \]
\[ \text{CIE} = 52.5 + 20 = 72.5\% \]

Step 6: Convert CIE to Level

Since 72.5% ≥ 70%, CIE Level = 3

Step 7: SEE Calculation (60 Marks)
  • Class Average = 36 Marks (out of 60)
  • Threshold = 0.60 × 36 = 21.6 ≈ 22 Marks
  • 5 students scored ≥ 22 Marks
\[ \text{SEE Percentage} = \frac{5}{10} \times 100 = 50\% \]

50% corresponds to Level 1

Step 8: Final Direct Assessment (DA)
\[ \text{DA} = (0.40 \times 3) + (0.60 \times 1) \]
\[ \text{DA} = 1.2 + 0.6 = 1.8 \]

Step 9: Add Indirect Assessment (Course End Survey)

Assume Course End Survey gives IDA Level = 2.5

\[ \text{Final CO Attainment} = (0.90 \times 1.8) + (0.10 \times 2.5) \]
\[ \text{Final CO Attainment} = 1.62 + 0.25 = 1.87 \]

Step 10: Compare with Target

Assume Target Level = 2.1

\[ 1.87 < 2.1 \]

The Course Outcome has NOT attained the target level.

Corrective measures such as remedial classes, tutorial sessions, and assessment strategy refinement must be implemented to improve attainment.

This example demonstrates the complete step-by-step CO attainment calculation process implemented in the system using the 30–30–10–60 evaluation structure.
